I have had the honor of hiking into the Floracliff Nature Preserve on a few separate occasions now to photograph some of the oldest trees in the state.  I have to give a huge thank you to Beverly for this awesome opportunity to explore some areas that few people get to go.  I also have to thank my friend Neil who fearlessly trekked along with me through vast seas of poison ivy in his shorts and sandals.  I don’t think he’ll underdress next time.

Here’s a few of the images from my latest excursion.

I met with Sarah and Jake at Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort,KY on April 20th to go over their wedding day and shoot some engagement pictures.

It is an awesome location for a wedding and portraits.  I am really looking forward to being part of their special day.

Here a few shots from the portrait session.

I was able to set up a few lights on either side of the stage and shoot a live performance of the Blind Corn Liquor Pickers at Al’s Bar.  This was one of the funnest nights of shooting I’ve had in a long time.  The music was great and the energy in the bar was amazing.

Here’s a few shots.

I have been trying to get myself to Al’s on Tuesday night for the open mic night.  Several friends play there and I figured it would be a good time to set up a wireless flash and see what images I could make.  I finally made it out last night and here’s the result.

Open Mic Night at Al’s Bar

I was lured outside by a cardinal but I wound up in the greenhouse with the chickens.

Silkies

I got a super sweet deal on a Lastolite 3′ Cubelite kit off eBay.  It arrived today and Quinton (my son) wanted some pictures taken of some of his toys.  The dolls are hand made by Blayne and the Lego Bionicle inspired toy is Quinton’s own creation (no instructions, straight from his brain!).  The others are things Quinton brought me to photograph.  I am very excited to have this and I’m looking forward to putting it to use photographing hand made craft by local artisans.

I was at a symposium today and one of the presenters had an image of a glowing test tube in their presentation.  I wanted to try to recreate the effect so here is my first attempt.

Glowing Glass

I spent an hour or so at the Broke Spoke Bike Shop in Lexington.  This is a non-profit that is refurbishing old bikes for those that want a bike but can’t afford a brand new one.   They also are providing the space and tools for you to work on your own bike.

The Broke Spoke

This is my Joe McNally inspired shot for Halloween.  I used three speedlights:  one with a 1/2 CTO gel through a Lastolite 24″ Softbox at camera left (1/2 power) for the model, one behind the spooky figure with a green gel at full power, and one on the ground behind a tombstone with a green gel shooting up into the tree at full power.  The camera settings:  iso 400 -shutter  1/125 – aperature 5.6

Thanks to James and Caitlyn for helping out.  We got out of the cemetery just as it started raining and the winds started howling.

Spooky Cemetery

I attended a workshop over the weekend hosted by Gustavo Alfaro.  Here is a sample of images I was able to make.

Thanks to all the models who helped make this a great learning experience.
